The Assam government, spearheaded by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is poised to enact legislation mandating life imprisonment in cases of ‘love jihad,’ as articulated by Sarma during a BJP executive gathering in Guwahati on Sunday.

Additionally, Sarma divulged plans for a novel domicile policy, wherein only individuals born within the state will qualify for government employment, as per PTI’s report. This move underscores the prioritization of indigenous residents in the dispensation of the “one lakh government jobs” pledged before the elections, with a comprehensive list forthcoming.

In a bid to address communal harmony, the Assam administration has also decreed regulations governing land transactions between Hindus and Muslims. Concurrently, Sarma announced a cessation of VIP culture, mandating that only vegetarian and satvik cuisine be served at all state-sponsored events.

Moreover, the government is set to launch a pilot initiative that aims to issue Aadhaar cards and birth certificates concurrently to newborns in 13 medical colleges. “A dedicated center will be established in these institutions to ensure that a newborn receives an Aadhaar card shortly after birth,” Sarma stated at a press briefing. This initiative will eventually extend to district hospitals, aiming to streamline the process so that children obtain both documents promptly without enduring prolonged wait times.

The Chief Minister also expounded on other measures, including a scheme to allocate ₹2 lakh to Below Poverty Line (BPL) youth for establishing small enterprises. District-specific interviews for the first phase will commence from August 16 to September 5, with fund disbursements slated for completion by September 30. Under the Mukhya Mantri Atma Nirbhar Asom scheme, 30,000 youths will benefit in the first phase, followed by an additional 70,000 in the second phase.
