Manu Bhaker, a 22-year-old shooter, made history by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She became the first Indian to win a medal at these games and the first female Indian shooter to earn an Olympic medal. Throughout the competition, Bhaker demonstrated outstanding skill and calmness, staying in the top three positions for most of the event. She was slightly ahead in second place before the final shot but finished in third, securing the bronze.
This victory marks the beginning of India’s medal tally at the Paris Olympics, with the country hoping to surpass its previous record of seven medals from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Bhaker’s path to the final was impressive, starting with a strong performance in the qualifications. She finished third with a score of 580, bouncing back from a tough day for Indian shooting on Saturday, July 27. Veronika Major from Hungary led the qualification with a score of 582, while Rhythm Sangwan, the other Indian competitor, ended up in 15th place with a score of 573.
Bhaker started the competition well, scoring 97 points in the first series, placing her in fourth position. She maintained her form with another 97 in the second series, while Sangwan dropped to 26th after a poor round. Bhaker improved to second place with an excellent score of 98 in the third series. An 8 in the fifth series was her only major mistake, but she still secured her spot in the final.
In addition to Bhaker’s success, India’s Ramita Jindal also qualified for a final at the Paris Olympics. Jindal finished fifth in the women’s 10m air rifle qualification with a score of 631.5. However, another Indian shooter, Elavenil Valarivan, narrowly missed the final, finishing 10th with a score of 630.7. Jindal, who previously won a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games, became the second Indian shooter to reach a final at these games, following Bhaker’s qualification.
